Group Processing using GTEP
Healing Together: How GTEP Therapy Helps Groups Recover from Trauma
When people experience something traumatic—whether it's a natural disaster, an act of violence, a tragic loss, or any other life-altering event—it often leaves behind not just individual pain, but a shared sense of disruption. The question many survivors ask is: Where do we begin to heal, especially when we’ve been through it together?
That’s where GTEP therapy comes in.
What Is GTEP?
GTEP stands for Group Traumatic Episode Protocol. It’s a powerful, evidence-based therapy that gently helps people process trauma in a group setting—without having to speak about the details of what happened.
GTEP is based on EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing), a widely respected treatment for trauma. But unlike traditional EMDR, GTEP is designed specifically for groups of people who’ve experienced a shared or similar trauma—such as first responders, survivors of community violence, medical teams after crisis, or even families and friend groups after a tragic loss. It can also be provided for individuals with different traumas who want to do this work in a group setting.
Why GTEP Works
GTEP is special because it offers:
Privacy within connection – You can begin processing your trauma without having to talk about it out loud, which makes it especially safe for those who feel overwhelmed or shut down by retelling.
A sense of togetherness – Healing happens alongside others who get it. This helps reduce isolation, shame, and the feeling of being “the only one.”
A structured, gentle approach – The process is guided step-by-step by a trained therapist, with built-in safety and support.
Who Can Benefit?
GTEP is helpful for any group of people who’ve been through something difficult together; or for individuals with different traumatic experiences—such as:
Teams impacted by a crisis at work
Families affected by sudden loss or trauma
Survivors of community tragedies
Groups supporting someone with trauma
Veterans or first responders who want to heal without having to "re-live" experiences aloud
Even if the traumatic event happened a long time ago—or was recent but still feels raw—GTEP can help calm your nervous system and restore a sense of inner peace.
What to Expect
You’ll be part of a small, confidential group guided by a certified GTEP facilitator. The process doesn’t require you to share any personal story unless you choose to. You’ll be led through calming techniques and then into a gentle, internal processing experience using eye movements or tapping—simple tools that help the brain heal from stored trauma.
The group moves together, yet each person remains focused on their own internal work. Most participants leave feeling lighter, clearer, and more grounded.
Final Thoughts: You Deserve Healing
Trauma can isolate us—but healing doesn’t have to happen alone.
GTEP offers a unique, compassionate path to recovery in the company of others who understand. Whether you’re part of a workplace, family, or support group that’s hurting, GTEP creates a safe space to reconnect with strength, safety, and hope.
If you’re curious about trying GTEP or want to know if it’s right for your group, I’d be honored to talk with you.
